Colphil Cup – Canterbury O60s v Southland O60s

Canterbury and Southland yet again played for the Colphil Cup – an annual event played between the two regions for Over 60’s. Six men and six women traveled to Invercargill on Wednesday morning to play at the Invercargill Bowling Club in a range of Pairs, Triples and Mixed Fours over two days. Quad Results – Success for Canterbury

Beautiful conditions at the weekend for the Southern Quadrangular tournament. Held at Bowls Papanui Club, four regions played for the top spot; Marlborough, Nelson, Dunedin and Canterbury in both the Men’s and Women’s grades. Playing four disciplines; singles, pairs, triples and fours; each team of 10 are playing to the best of their ability to prove themselves against Southern’s best in front of each of the regions selectors before they each name their Intercentre team to take part in the Bowls NZ national intercentre competition next month. Centre Mixed Fours Update

In the Centre Mixed Fours event, we had originally kept the make up of teams open to either 2 men/2 women, 3 men/1 woman or 3 women/1 man, as this is the first season we have run the competition. However, after receiving feedback from numerous players we have decided to alter this. Teams must now be made up of 2 men and 2 women only.

Sad Passing of James (Jim) Meek

We are sad to hear of the passing of James (Jim) Meek. Jim was a past President and Life Member of Papanui Club Outdoor Bowls. His funeral will be held Thursday 24th January at 2.00pm. Attendees are asked to wear their club shirts. The service will be held at Lamb & Hayward Westpark Chapel – 467 Wairakei Rd, Burnside.

At the weekend the Bowls Canterbury Men’s Development team traveled to Greymouth to compete for the Lindley Neil trophy – a bowls event again the Canterbury Men’s Development team and the West Coast Men’s Team. The event was held over two days at the Karoro Bowling Club in Greymouth; with teams playing in Triples and Fours on Saturday, followed by Pairs on Sunday. After the first day, the Canterbury men were narrowly ahead on wins, winning 3 out of the 4 triples games and one of the three Fours games; Meaning Canterbury Development had 4 wins and West Coast had 3. First Representative Fixture of 2019 – Canterbury Development Men’s Team v West Coast

The 2019 year is upon on us and we have the first representative fixture this weekend with the Men’s Development competition against the West Coast Men’s Team; known as the Lindley Neil. This year the men will travel over to Greymouth and will play at Karoro Bowling Club in a range of disciplines over the two days. Canterbury are looking to retain the trophy, after winning last year at Bowls Hornby. This year the Coasters have the home advantage, which alternates between either region each year. New Zealand Blind Bowls Nationals – Singles Champions Found

The singles competition has now been completed and the 2018 Champions found. Glenn Hanneman with his Director Bernard Yeo made every post a winner convincingly winning all six matches to claim the B1 title. Hanneman played consistently well throughout the championship to keep his opposition to single figures in every match. Louise Henry (with Director Norm Parkes) was the runner up in this event. The B2 event was a very close encounter with last years winner and local favourite Deane Robertson (with Director Kevin Smith) attempting to defend his title against Gerald Brouwers (with Director Bill Easton). Heavy great skies and intermittent drizzle did not stop a spectacular day of bowls at the Burnside Bowling Club on Monday as the Summer of Bowls continues. A high standard of skilful play occurred as players battled unpleasant weather in the singles event of the New Zealand Blind Lawn Bowling Association National Championships. The singles event will be completed today with many key match ups likely to have a significant impact on the final placings. A special group of bowlers have descended on the Burnside Bowling Club today with the New Zealand Blind Lawn Bowling Association National Championships being played. Singles will be played today t and Tuesday, followed by pairs on  Wednesday and Thursday. This is the first time the event has been held in Christchurch. There are four divisions – B1, B2, B3 and B4. The B1 is the totally blind division. Players in the B2 category can see very little and nothing clearly. They can usually only see light changes within a couple of feet range.
