Proposed Bowling Club in Hanmer Springs

Meg ParfittNews

It looks very likely we will soon have a new club in Canterbury. This
will be based in the grounds of the Hanmer Springs Golf Club. Years ago, there were two greens used by World War One soldiers rehabilitating at the Queen Mary Hospital. Originally, they established natural greens but the extreme temperatures the area experiences meant the greens failed to
thrive. The bowling area was covered in asphalt which is still there but a little worse for wear. Now a group of keen non-bowlers are now working hard to establish an artificial surface on the original site. The intention is to provide bowls for the locals and the hundreds of holiday makers who
frequent the town. Janet Messervy and Tina Steele are the drivers behind the scheme and have already held successful fundraising events.
