The Winter Coaching Clinic for Under 5 bowlers was on Sunday 2 & 16 August at Kaiapoi Riverside, Redcliffs Mount Pleasant and St Martins. A total number of 71 player registrations were received from as far south as Timaru to as far north as Cust and from everywhere else in between.

The aim is to have a coach to player ratio of 1:4. This year we had the most coaches ever; 26 from across Canterbury so that goal was achieved.

A mix of qualified Development Coaches, Foundation Coaches, and Trainee Foundation Coaches attended. This Clinic provided coaches the opportunity to learn from each other while supporting new coaches coming into the Bowls NZ Coach programme.

The topics covered included pre-shot routine, delivery, Laws of the Sport and etiquette.

Coach feedback indicated that the quality of players was high which is a fantastic sign as we move towards the start of the 2020/2021 season. It is anticipated that most of these players will participate in the Bowls Canterbury Under 5’s Singles in January 2021 and the many other Centre events they are eligible for.

Bowls Canterbury would like to thank the host Clubs, the Coaches who volunteered their time and the Players who have sought out coaching to develop their own bowling skills.

Programmes like this ensures Canterbury will continue to be the best Bowls Centre in New Zealand. As always, it has been a great event to organise for our Under 5’s Players – Emily Robbins
