This year will be the 20th playing of the prestigious Under 26 Singles event, with the 2023 LivingHouse Burnside Under 26 Singles tournament taking place at the Burnside Bowling Club onAvonhead Road in Christchurch from Friday 6 October to Sunday 8 October. Tournament Organiser Kerrie Bruce has assembled a top-class field of New Zealand’s best youngbowlers, as well as attracting entries from overseas. Festival of Bowls – 3rd & 4th February 2024

Traditionally Bowls Canterbury has hosted the Super Sixes over the first weekend in February for teams from Dunedin, South Canterbury, Marlborough, Buller and Nelson. This year we are introducing opportunities for Centre Development teams because there are very few competitions for these teams other than Zone events.  Under 26’s (pairs) because we need more opportunities for our young bowlers. We also recently met with our senior team selectors, and they are keen to field a Canterbury Senior Reserve team during the Festival of Bowls weekend. Last weekend at Burnside Bowling Club-New Zealand, Graeme Rees ran the Canterbury Coaching courses. Thank you, to the Burnside Bowling Club for hosting us, and to Graeme Rees who did a fantastic job presenting to our Foundation, development, and Update coaches. We were fortunate enough to have Kevin Smith, Olivia Mancer, Richard Smith (HPSNZ), and Tim Fearnley assisting over the weekend and sharing their knowledge. Thank you to all the coaches for your effort, enthusiasm, and input, it was a great weekend with lots of positive discussions, learning, and activities.

Congratulations to Kevin Smith for being awarded an ISAPA scholarship!! For the first time in history, Aotearoa is hosting the 24th International Symposium of Adaptive Physical Activity – ISAPA, which is dedicated to advancing equitable opportunities, environments, and experiences of disabled tamariki and rangatahi in play, active recreation, and sport. Sport NZ has acknowledged Kevin’s hard work he does in this area, where he continues to create opportunities for any individual to play Lawn Bowls and makes everyone feel included. Well done Kevin!

Welcome Hanmer Springs Bowling Club – Bowls Canterbury’s 55th Affiliated Club!

Hanmer Springs Bowling Club had their official opening over the weekend and what a wonderful occasion it was! We are so thrilled to welcome them as the 55th affiliated club with Bowls Canterbury. Mayor of Hurunui, Marie Black, had the honor of cutting the ribbon. The new TigerTurf New Zealand green was looking spectacular and the atmosphere was fantastic, with a great turn out from the community. The invitational tournament on Sunday was a huge success, with each team including a non-bowling member from the Hanmer Springs community. Thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this happen! We look forward to a roll-up next time we’re up in Hanmer Springs.

Canterbury Stars Shine at Multi Nations

Congratulations to our Canterbury players who represented New Zealand in the Blackjacks squad for the 2023 Multi-Nations played on the Gold Coast! Teams from Australia, Queensland, Norfolk Island, Hong Kong, Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand have been battling it out for gold, silver and bronze in what has proven to be an ideal precursor to the upcoming World Bowls Championships in August. The final day saw New Zealand walk away with six medals in total, with two being gold, two silver and two bronze. The New Zealand women also came away with the Multi Nations Overall Women’s Trophy!
