ColPhil Cup Results – Over 60s Canterbury v Southland

Earlier in the week on Tuesday and Wednesday, Papanui Club hosted the ColPhil Cup Over 60’s Representative event. It was a great two days and as well a the bowls being played, lots of laughs were had between the two teams too. The event initiated between two stalwarts of the sport in their region; Colin Reynolds from Canterbury and Phil Cross from Southland – hence the name ColPhil; a combination of the two names. Teams of six men and six women will play; pairs, triples and mixed fours over the two days. This representative event is a highlight on the calander for both regions. This weekend two Canterbury Clubs play host to the representative fixture between Marlborough, Tasman, Dunedin and Canterbury. Bowls Papanui will host the Men’s division and Papanui Club will host the Women’s division. Play begins at 12.30pm on Saturday at both greens and then on Sunday at 9.00am also at both greens. If you are in town, please get down to the Papanui greens to support our teams. Burnside Blind Bowler Selected for NZ Team

Deane Robertson and his Director, Kevin Smith from the Burnside Club have today been selectedΒ in the New Zealand Blindjacks to play Australia in May 2020 at Port Macquarie, NSW. Robertson, who will make his international debut at the event, won the B2 Singles and was runner up in the B1/B2 Pairs at the Summerset Bowls NZ Championships recently completed in Christchurch. This is a great achievement for Robertson who has only been playing bowls for three years. He will play singles and mixed pairs in the three day test series.

Due to the predicted forecast weather (34 degrees) on Sunday 2nd February there may be alterations to the programme. We must take into consideration the health and safety of our players, spectators and volunteers, as well as the health of the green. This may mean we consider any or all of the following: Start earlier on Sunday morning before the scheduled 8.30am start time i.e. 7.30am Take a few hours break in between rounds if temperatures are too high to play, meaning the day could finish later in the evening prior to sunset Reschedule games that are scheduled in the afternoon round to the morning rounds to be played before peak temperatures Hosing the green with water throughout the day … Read More

JANUARY 17th – 19th The Burnside Bowling Club will once again host some of Australia’s and New Zealand’s finest bowling talent in this years event being held this weekend. The prestigious $11,200 tournament which has Bayleys as its major sponsor is without question one of New Zealand’s premier club events. This years field includes four of Australia’s top bowlers and an equally talented number of New Zealanders. Australia is sending two mens teams and two womens teams, all of which have very strong credentials. Nz Blind Bowls Nationals

This week in Hamilton was the New Zealand Blind Bowls. Canterbury were fortunate enough to have two Blind Bowlers attend this event; Deane Robertson and Tom Boyd both from Burnside Bowling Club. Hosted by the Frankton Junction Bowling Club over the week bowlers and their guides participated in Singles and Pairs. Dean and Tom were both in the B2 category and we are very proud to report Tom was runner up in the B2 Singles. Marjorie Gundry Women’s Event – Kaikoura

On Tuesday 19th November two Canterbury Women’s teams travelled to Kaikoura to play the Marlborough Women’s teams. Last year the Canterbury Women’s teams won the event based on differential, both teams had won 6 games each. This year proved just as close with Canterbury winning 6.5 games to Marlborough’s 5.5. Centre Over 60’s Singles Winner

Congratulations to Burnside’s Mike Small who has won the Centre Over 60’s Singles title for the 2019-2020 season. He played in the final against Canterbury 2017’s Rick Day, taking the win 21-16. This is the third time in the last four seasons where Rick and Mike have faced each other in the final of this event. A great effort for both men! We had 13 players in total qualify for post section, which was held yesterday at Beckenham BC. New Zealand Disabled Bowls at Kaiapoi Riverside

The New Zealand Disabled Bowls Nationals are being held at Kaiapoi Riverside this week and supporting greens, Papanui and Kaiapoi Club. Monday and Tuesday saw the Singles Event take place, concluding with a thrilling final between Lynda Bennett and local man Frank Overend. Lynda proved too strong though taking the win 21-19. Full results from the plate final and top eight can be found here: NZ Disabled Bowls Singles Results This event is part of the Summer of Bowls Calendar and is being live streamed from the NZ Disabled Facebook page. Wednesday and Thursday will host drawn pairs. Results will be posted the following day.
