Today the Bowls Canterbury board sent the following update to all clubs in Canterbury. Staff Update It was with regret that the Board of Bowls Canterbury accepted the resignation of their CEO, Mel Tukapua on Monday. Mel has been at Bowls Canterbury for six years, three of them as CEO. Mel’s contribution has been enormous and been responsible for some new successful initiatives while keeping the Centre the thriving hub of the sport in Canterbury. Mel is moving on to a role outside of sport which will be a fresh challenge for her. Mel’s last day at Bowls Canterbury will be 12th June 2020. Updated Office Hours

The Bowls Canterbury Office and Shop is now open in Level 2 and will be operating on reduced hours. The new hours are as follows: Monday – Thursday9am – 2pm Friday – CLOSED Staff will be in and out of the office during these times. If you are coming into the office please call ahead to ensure staff are available. You will also be required to sign in upon arrival. Life Member – Jack Gillespie

The Staff and Board are saddened to hear of the passing of Bowls Canterbury Life Member – Jack Gillespie. Jack passed away on Monday 11th May 2020. Jack was not only a Life Member of Bowls Canterbury but also at Woolston Park Bowling Club where he was also the Woolston Park BC longest standing member. Jack was a heavily involved with the Bowls Canterbury Match Committee between the 1980’s through to the late 1990’s. This involved orgainising and running most of the Bowls Canterbury Tournaments.     A reminder that submissions/feedback for the review of the season is due by Thursday 30th April. Once again at the conclusion of the 2019/2020 season we are implementing a review of the season, and receiving feedback/recommendations for the 2020/2021 playing programme. Bowls NZ Online Coaching Course Update

With the current lock down situation, Bowls NZ has changed the format for the Foundation, Development and Update courses meant to be held over the 2nd and 3rd of May 2020 at Kaiapoi Riverside BC. The course will now be for Foundation and Update coaches, due to the Development course needing to be out on the green more so than the other two courses. Bowls New Zealand have released a set of guidelines that they have developed for the bowls community to work within in relation to the Covid-19 Alert Levels that the Government advise are in place at any given time. Dear All Due to the ongoing health and safety concerns regarding Covid-19, and the speed at which developments are occurring, Bowls Canterbury has today reached the decision to suspend all bowls. Good Afternoon All Following yesterday’s update we have had many clubs come back to Bowls Canterbury with information regarding Club events and tournaments and whether they have since been cancelled or in some cased postponed. I wish to thank these clubs with providing Bowls Canterbury with that information and also thank all club executives for taking the best interests of their bowling club members into consideration. Bowls Canterbury – Coronavirus Update 3: 17/03/2020 Please read previous correspondence also at the bottom of this post. As per previous correspondence, Bowls Canterbury are following advice from the Ministry of Health and at this stage the advice to cancel events is for attendees over 500. We don’t anticipate any of our events being over that capacity however we will be taking in to consideration the demographic of our members before making any decisions. Bowls New Zealand have postponed (for at least 6 months) the National Intercentre which was scheduled for later in the week. As well as the North v South event. Centre Over 60’s Fours Winners

Congratulations to Elmwood Park’s John Mears, Bev Morel, Bruce Humphreys and Don Baker who have won the Centre Over 60’s Fours title for the 2019-2020 season. They played in the final against Redcliffs Mt Pleasant’s Ron Gatehouse, Rod Grout, Annabel Walmisley and Jude Main, taking the win 16-6. A great effort to both teams! We had 6 out of 14 teams qualify for post section, which was held today at Fendalton BC. Thank you to Bowls Hornby and Fendalton for hosting over the two day event, and to our umpires, Ann Wright and Dennis Maguire.

The Canterbury Men’s and Women’s selectors have named their squads to attend Bowls New Zealand’s National Intercentre event at the end of the month. The men are hoping to retain their title from 2019 and the women are hoping to snatch back their 2018 title. Regional Development Event

At the weekend our Canterbury Development Men’s and Women’s Teams traveled to Greymouth to play in a regional development fixture between; Buller, Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast. The Men played at Blaketown Bowling Club and the Women at Cobden Bowling Club. Teams played five rounds throughout the weekend. Each region varied in terms of Development Grade years. As Canterbury has done throughout the season; our Development grade remained at 5 playing years or under. The overall results were very close in both grades. In the Women’s Section; Marlborough finished in top place with 8 wins, closely followed by our Canterbury ladies who had 7 wins – which was the same wins as the West Coast; but Canterbury beat them … Read More

Town v Country

Lincoln Bowling Club hosted the final Town and Country Development event for the season at the weekend. Country players made themselves available to play for the town team so the Canterbury selectors could see potential combinations for their final seven players for the Regional Development event on the West Coast at the end of the month. A good mixture of results played through both the Men’s and Women’s sections; however the strong combinations in the Town teams were successful overall – winning both sections.
