Sad Passing of Colin Reynolds

Meg ParfittNews

It is with sadness we acknowledge the passing of former Bowls Canterbury CEO Colin Reynolds. Colin was in the role from 2010 to December 2013. He led Bowls Canterbury through the rocky earthquake era and was responsible for a comprehensive report on the state of our clubs following the February quake. Colin was also at the helm during the time when Bowls Canterbury was the Southern Regional Office, responsible for driving the Bowls New Zealand ‘One Bowls One Vision’ strategy. These roles presented challenges especially as the earthquakes needed more attention and energy and Colin embraced then professionally. Colin’s legacy in Canterbury will live on for many years. During his time as the CEO, Colin donated trophies for the Sportsman … Read More

Top Award for Top Bowler

Erica AyresNews

Katelyn Inch has been named the Bowls New Zealand Summerset Supreme Award winner for 2020. 2020 has been an outstanding year for Katelyn who is currently based at the Broadbeach Club in Queensland. This award is fitting as she picked up two national titles in January playing on greens she grew up on and that she defeated one of New Zealand’s most capped bowlers. From the early days of when she started playing with her father at Oxford and then while at St Margaret’s College there have been a number of other Cantabrians that have played a part in developing Katelyn into the top player she is today. Congratulations Katelyn from everyone in Canterbury. We are extremely proud of your … Read More

Bowls New Zealand Club of the Year – Congratulations and well done Papanui Club on being named the Bowls New Zealand 2020 Club of the Year. Last season was a busy year for the club, it not only acted as headquarters for the Bowls New Zealand Summerset Nationals in January, the Club also hosted several events for Bowls Canterbury during the season. The Club will be hosting last season’s postponed Champion of Champions Finals Weekend on 10/11 October. Not only do events like this require a massive number of volunteers on the day, the behind scenes organisation prior to any event is considerable and relies heavily on more volunteers than just those on the committee. The people in the kitchen, … Read More

Proposed Bowling Club in Hanmer Springs

Meg ParfittNews

It looks very likely we will soon have a new club in Canterbury. Thiswill be based in the grounds of the Hanmer Springs Golf Club. Years ago, there were two greens used by World War One soldiers rehabilitating at the Queen Mary Hospital. Originally, they established natural greens but the extreme temperatures the area experiences meant the greens failed tothrive. The bowling area was covered in asphalt which is still there but a little worse for wear. Now a group of keen non-bowlers are now working hard to establish an artificial surface on the original site. The intention is to provide bowls for the locals and the hundreds of holiday makers whofrequent the town. Janet Messervy and Tina Steele are … Read More

The Winter Coaching Clinic for Under 5 bowlers was on Sunday 2 & 16 August at Kaiapoi Riverside, Redcliffs Mount Pleasant and St Martins. A total number of 71 player registrations were received from as far south as Timaru to as far north as Cust and from everywhere else in between. The aim is to have a coach to player ratio of 1:4. This year we had the most coaches ever; 26 from across Canterbury so that goal was achieved. A mix of qualified Development Coaches, Foundation Coaches, and Trainee Foundation Coaches attended. Elmwood Park National Bowls3Five Champions

Meg ParfittNews

Congratulations to the Elmwood Park Bowling Club, winners of the Bowls New Zealand National Club Bowls3Five competition. The team defeated Manurewa Club 3-0 in the final at the Naenae Bowling Club over the weekend. On the way to the final Elmwood Park defeated teams from the Blenheim Club and Manurewa but lost 2-1 to the Putaruru Club. The side won two of the three final games 2-0 and only needed to win the tie breaker but Elmwood Park won that easily in the end. One of the advantages of winning this event for a club was that it gave them an entry into the televised Bowls3Five.  Elmwood Park played in that event last year so already have their spot booked. … Read More
